Fresh off of a two-goal outing against the Blackhawks a display that brought Ovechkin level with Gretzky at 894 goals acro s their respective careers Ovechkin cut a composed figure during Sunday's match with the Islanders. His demeanor paid off; with 7:26 gone in the second period, the 39-year old launched a dart past fellow Ru sian Ilya Sorokin. The finish sent the bipartisan UBS Arena crowd into rapture. The Great 8 was as gracious as one could be following such an epic moment, shaking every New York player's hand once celebrations erupted. Washington suffered a decisive defeat to the Islanders on Sunday afternoon, a major result in New York's chase for a wild card spot. And yet, the Caps' lo s meant very little in the grand scheme of things. The reason why? Ovechkin finally got his marker. The NHL record books will soon reflect such a notable moment, too.
