You know the situation is dire when Sean Avery is the voice of reason. The retired NHL winger and notorious on-ice instigator weighed in on Saturday nights incident involving Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri and Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk. Kadri cro s-checked DeBrusk in the third period after a series of physical exchanges throughout the game, earning himself afive-minute major and a game misconduct. "That's one of those unwritten rule hits that you don't throw, especially to a guy that's played 20fing years in the NHL. "But obviously the refs had their whistleup their a s or they were too fing slow and were two lines behind the play, so they didn't see it so they couldn't have called it." Kadri has beenoffered an in-person hearing, which is usually a precursor to a lengthy suspension. The 28-year-old was suspended three games last season for a hit on then-Bruins forward Tommy Wingels. "The only problem with Kadri's hit [on DeBrusk] is he didn't take the top fingrow of DeBrusk's teeth out," Avery said. Avery, 39, is a 10-year NHL veteran who is no stranger to questionable hits and tactics on the ice. The former Ranger is infamous for his longstanding rivalry with legendaryDevils goalie Martin Brodeur. Most notably, their storied past includes the invention of "The Avery Rule" after the temperamental winger purposely obstructed the netminder's view in lieu of trying to make an actual play. MORE: However, it's obvious that Avery, who suited up for the Red Wings, Kings, Rangers, and Stars during his career, supports Toronto in the series. With that in mind, he wants to see more aggre sion fromthe Maple Leafs as the series shifts to Toronto. "It's time for fing Auston Matthews to wake up," Avery said.
